Creating mindful schools and universities: organisational approaches to mindful education
Mindfulness is a generic skill with a wide range of applications, many of which are relevant to education. Benefits are increasingly being demonstrated for student wellbeing, social functioning and academic performance. As a result, more and more educational institutions are becoming interested in providing mindfulness training for their students and staff.
This interactive presentation explores the notion of applied mindfulness and outlines innovative and effective ways that mindfulness is being taught to students at all levels (primary, secondary and tertiary). This ranges from providing “plug-and-play” app-based meditation in the classroom through to structured elective programs, curriculum-based mindfulness programs, teacher training and whole-of school approaches. The presentation also outlines the ways mindfulness is routinely communicated to different stakeholders at Monash University in order to increase its uptake.
