Conference Theme: Mindfulness, Education and Transformation
Textual traditions inform that mindfulness has been centrally situated in Buddhism since the earliest beginnings, more than 2500 years ago. The formation of modern Buddhism, with a new marked emphasis on meditation, has generated since the early 20th century a great expansion of mindfulness practice among lay population, which expanded well beyond its original monastic boundaries and, decades later, became established in entirely new, secular contexts and settings, most notably as a therapeutic tool. In the new domains the meaning and function of mindfulness have been reinterpreted and reinvented significantly. Since mindfulness has entered universities and has been incorporated into mainstream science, research on the benefits of mindfulness has been growing exponentially. More recently, mindfulness has been introduced in school environments, and its impact on physical and psychological well-being of school children has been researched increasingly.
The key theme of this conference is the application of mindfulness in education, focusing on theoretical and practical issues and implications, benefits and outcomes relating to the introduction of mindfulness in education. It will provide a platform for academic researchers, educators, students and practitioners to engage and collaborate in ongoing discussions within this field; to share the latest research on the application of mindfulness in school environments as well as universities; to explore the role of mindfulness in the process of conflict resolution (personal and interpersonal) and transformation; to investigate the links between mindfulness, loving kindness and ethics; to examine the theoretical issues involved in the new secular interpretations and applications of mindfulness, especially in relation to ethics and soteriology. The participants will be able to familiarise or deepen their insights into the fast growing research field of mindful education; explore the main techniques of mindfulness currently introduced in schools; have the opportunity to experience the meditative environment of a Buddhist temple which will be the conference venue.
