Mindfulness and learner success in Australian higher education
The scope of this paper is to determine how far mindfulness contributes positively to the success of non-traditional students in tertiary education in Australia. The literature review covers mindfulness practices in higher education in general and specific examples in the Australian landscape. It is found that mindfulness is still a fledgling concept in this country. A mindfulness inventory tool was piloted and administered as a questionnaire on a group of students from a pathway programme to a leading Australian university. This tool has been used in a different context successfully and published by other researchers prior to this. The results show a significant relationship between students’ levels of mindfulness and their success in academia. It is especially helpful to assist learners who come from challenging backgrounds to cope with life in a university. It is recommended that mindfulness practices be integrated into tertiary education in the country to ensure effective student learning and success.
