Bringing the soul back to school: lessons learned over 15 years of teaching mindfulness and mind-body health in Israeli schools
It is an undeniable fact that the world of tomorrow depends largely on the young people of today. In this regard, there are many good reasons why schools should truly equip today's young people with skills for self-awareness, emotional intelligence, resilience and mind-body health.
This presentation will demonstrate our mindfulness-based, whole school approach model, and how we are applying mindfulness-based resources to nurture the inner lives of children, teachers and parents. We'll summarize our insights from over 15 years of teachings in whole school settings in Israel, as well as our observations of mindfulness in education projects designed by like-minded colleagues around the world.
The talk will introduce the basic assumptions, integrative principles, strategies, techniques and working model of our whole school approach, where mindfulness is integrated into the school's curriculum for the whole year, with specific modules for children, teachers and parents. We'll describe the outcomes of one school's long term process, in which the mindfulness-based approach is integral in the curriculum and culture for the last ten years.
We shall outline our different levels of implementation in working with children, teachers and parents, and the different challenges each one presents. We'll discuss similarities and differences between our whole school model as compared to programmes in the USA, Canada, Australia and England.
