Applying the mindfulness concept to write athletes' life stories: a case study of National Taiwan Sport University
“Mindfulness” means observing objectively one’s body and mind by insight meditation retreats, in order to understand the nidana (chain of causation), impermanence (all of conditioned existence without exception, is transient or in a constant state of flux), anatta (all things perceived by the senses are not really “I” or “mine”), dukkha (the suffering, anxiety, stress, and unsatisfactoriness), and to resolve pressure and fearfulness, and then acquiring the real wisdom of life. In psychology, we may suggest using pure mentality to “treat” the inner experiences then turn frustration into strength.
An athletes’ career may be ended by a minor injury. As an athlete, the competitive spirit existing or perishing means they are either alive or dead. Although the athletes were accustomed to failure, how can we guide young athletes to face frustrations squarely is an important assignment.
This is a case study of National Taiwan Sport University, the teacher applied self-narrative skills which blend into the mindfulness concept to instruct the students in self-healing. More than 200 students took part in this course, and most of them believed that this course could give them some ideas about frustration, and help them to reinterpret the meaning of life, so that they could understand their responsibilities. The teacher shared teaching experiences with athletes, coaches and related individuals.
